Rehabilitation centers have gone through substantial changes over the course of the past years. They were started as therapeutic communities, basically thanks to the techniques of an Italian bishop, Mario Picchi. Back in the 1940s and 1950s heroin was still a legal substance, freely marketed in Italy and Spain, which accounts for its traffic. Later on, rehabilitation centers began to appear on the Caribbean islands, specifically in the Dominican Republic. Then they went through to several Latin American countries, like Colombia, owing to the fact that they did not have that much success in the USA (they did in Latin America, though) because these treatments were merely based on therapy for already-recovered addicts or for those who said they had recovered, and a series of disproportionate controls were applied thus traumatizing people.

There are therapeutic communities whose approach is definitely based on the philosophy of the communities of the first Christian monks, basically following Saint Benito, represented by the motto in Latin, “ora et labora”, meaning “pray and work”, for that will lead you to achieving your internal perfection. It was through these monks that theotherapy communities were born, but unfortunately these have become closed-door communities that operate through an excessive number of norms and duties, even including physical penalties, which is totally detrimental for the patient.

Kernberg in the United States.
