Rehabilitation centers have gone through substantial changes over the course of the past years. They were started as therapeutic communities, basically thanks to the techniques of an Italian bishop, Mario Picchi. Back in the 1940s and 1950s heroin was still a legal substance, freely marketed in Italy and Spain, which accounts for its traffic. From there along came the major Italian mafias in Naples and Calabria. This scourge took prey of the Italian youths, and back then there were methods other than those of almost prison-like, disciplinary nature. These treatments were grounded on excessive normativity and severe therapeutic procedures; due to their being damaging for the human being, such treatments have been phased out thanks to the advance of new psychological and medical techniques.
In consequence, practically prison-like institutes were born; these places were called rehabilitation centers and therapeutic communities. These approaches then passed to Great Britain, so we must refer here to the musical revolution in combination with the use of psychedelics and acids.
Later on, rehabilitation centers began to appear on the Caribbean islands, specifically in the Dominican Republic. Then they went through to several Latin American countries, like Colombia, owing to the fact that they did not have that much success in the USA (they did in Latin America, though) because these treatments were merely based on therapy for already-recovered addicts or for those who said they had recovered, and a series of disproportionate controls were applied thus traumatizing people.
There are therapeutic communities whose approach is definitely based on the philosophy of the communities of the first Christian monks, basically following Saint Benito, represented by the motto in Latin, “ora et labora”, meaning “pray and work”, for that will lead you to achieving your internal perfection. It was through these monks that theotherapy communities were born, but unfortunately these have become closed-door communities that operate through an excessive number of norms and duties, even including physical penalties, which is totally detrimental for the patient.
When we refer to a community, to an integrative center for the treatment of addictions and emotional diseases, we essentially allude to the approaches proposed by Otto F. Kernberg in the United States. Places like this serve a select number of people with great medical, psychological and clinical assistance, and also regarding therapeutics for people who have already left addictions behind so they develop a greater sense of affiliation and transference. It is for that reason that Future Function Rehabilitation and Detox Center provides you with some of the tools and leverage of rehabilitation centers, Christian and monastic life communities, and detoxification centers.
As far as of today there are way more advanced mechanics for managing a rehabilitation center and for focusing its therapeutics, as is the case of cognitive-behavioral approaches, psychodynamic approaches and, actually, all the constituents of the School of Psychospirituality; this school’s goal is to lead people to be able to interiorize a model of life, a transformation, a spiritual metanoia. By means of this introjection, patients are given all the coexistence tools, professional tools and scientific tools to work on their symptoms at the biological, psychological, neuro-adaptation and neurotoxicity levels.
At the psychological level we work on pre-morbidity, co-morbidity and post-morbidity because addictions leave marks on the individual’s identity, their self and their personality, and this definitely calls for integrative, comprehensive treatment. The family also plays a key role in this process, so that is why we have a strong family focus so as to determine and promote, rather accurately, important changes the family itself can put into motion for harmonizing and attaining a fully proactive, assertive life.
We are pioneers of integrative rehabilitation centers in Latin America, thus offering service excellence along with our ample experience through an interdisciplinary approach for catering to your needs in a comprehensive manner. This calls for: primary attention when initial consumptions occur, for prevention purposes in the development of the addictive disease; secondary attention, when the signals of consumption are more problematic; and tertiary attention when an addiction has fully developed and relapse-prevention controls are required.
Through our Integral Approach, people will find an entirely humane, welcoming treatment, thus giving the person a great deal of freedom once the detoxification process has been completed. In our center not only do we apply detoxification ―understood as the traditional clinical procedure of managing the effects produced by substance withdrawal or drug abstinence syndrome―, but also a real detoxification process based on vitamins, minerals, ingesting certain fluids for proper hydration and sauna sessions, thus inducing the body to dry heat. After this process has been completed, we can do a thorough psychological work of conciliation of the person with him/herself by consolidating a life plan.
More often than not, the personal fulfillment levels of an addict or someone suffering emotional diseases are quite poor and rare, and their self-concept is greatly devalued. Therefore these patients must be treated with high standards of professionalism and with deep care and humanity, offering them the best service.
